Causality and logic

Module Overview

Originated by: Dr Eduardo Santos

Causality is what connects one process (the cause) with another process or state (the effect), where the first is partly responsible for the second, and the second is partly dependent on the first.

This module looks mental processes and how they are affected by logic and reasoning. Though it is basic to human thought, causality is a controversial topic because scientists and philosophers have had difficulties defining when one event truly causes another!

We will explore

  • What do we mean by cause and effect?
  • What is logic?
  • Everyday cause and effect
  • Puzzling out the logic!
  • Is there another way to see the situation?
