Challenging the stigma of mental illness

Module Overview

Originated by: Dr Cliodhna O’Connor

Unfortunately, negative attitudes and beliefs toward people who have a mental health condition are common. Stigma can lead to discrimination. Discrimination may be obvious and direct, such as someone making a negative remark about your mental illness or your treatment.

This module looks at attitudes to mental health and possible discrimination. People with mental health problems say that the social stigma attached to mental ill health and the discrimination they experience can make their difficulties worse and make it harder to recover.

We will explore

  • What is mental illness?
  • Myths of mental illness
  • The concept of mental illness stigma
  • How does stigma affect lives?
  • How can we help overcome mental illness stigma?
