Rationality

Module Overview

Originated by: Dr Adam Grief

Rationality is the mental quality or state of being rational – that is, being based on or agreeable to reason. Rationality implies the conformity of a person’s beliefs with their reasons to believe, and of a person’s actions with their reasons for action. “Rationality” has different specialized meanings in philosophy, economics, sociology, psychology, evolutionary biology, game theory and political science.

This module looks at rationality from the standpoint of philosophy. (It is also possible to discuss rationality from the standpoint of psychology)

We will explore

  • Introduction to rationality
  • Logical thinking
  • Aiming for the truth
  • Reasoning
  • Making rational judgements
