Sexual orientation

Module Overview

Originated by: Dr Tomaz Budefeld

Sexual orientation is explained as a long term pattern of romantic or sexual attraction (or a combination of these) to people of the opposite sex or gender, the same sex or gender, or to both sexes or more than one gender. Scientists do not know the exact cause of sexual orientation, but they theorise that it is directed by a complex interplay of genetic, hormonal, and environmental influences.

This module looks the range of sexual orientation in humans with an emphasis on homosexual orientation representing one of the types.

We will explore

  • What is sexual orientation
  • What are the biological factors that determine person’s homosexual orientation?
  • What is the social position of homosexual men and women in present-day societies?
  • Why people should not be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation
  • How we can work together to stamp out discrimination
