Skills, knowledge and understanding

Module Overview

Originated by: Dr Inma Gonzalez

Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness, or understanding of someone or something, such as facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which are acquired through experience or education by perceiving, discovering, or learning.

Knowledge acquisition involves complex mental processes including perception, communication, and reasoning.

This module looks at how the brain enables us to acquire knowledge and what happens for us to understand what we have learned. We learn the basics about neurons and how they work for us.

We will explore

  • What is knowledge?
  • What are neurons?
  • How do neurons work for us?
  • Class activity – making a string phone
  • Personal reflection on how we turn information into knowledge
